Image Options is Shattering Limits with a Mirror That’s Truly Infinite
Pushing Design and Engineering Boundaries, IO Builds Groundbreaking Custom Infinity Mirror
At Image Options, we take great pride in our ability to tackle even the most audacious design challenges, and our recent project—creating an unprecedentedly large custom infinity mirror—showcases this commitment. In a realm where most companies would falter at the very idea of a custom infinity mirror of such magnitude, we at Image Options embraced the challenge and transformed it into an opportunity to redefine the limits of what is possible. This project, which might well be the first of its kind in the United States in terms of scale, demonstrated our unique capacity for innovation and problem-solving. In addition, it highlights our dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to always exceed expectations.
For this project, our client approached us with a distinctive challenge: to create an infinity mirror in a custom shape that would place the viewer squarely at the heart of the company’s theme of innovation. The mirror intends to reflect their logo and integrate seamlessly with additional art installations, including hanging acrylic pieces and a flip wall. Jeff Veta, a senior design engineer here at IO, took on this project from concept to installation.
The original request presented a significant challenge due to the specified size, which we thought was unattainable at first given material constraints. To address this, we began by assessing the feasibility of the requested dimensions. We quickly identified that the material limitations would not allow for the proposed size. Our team presented several alternatives to the client, including dividing the mirror into sections or a bezel-less design inspired by infinity pools. While the client showed some interest in the sectional approach, they ultimately preferred a single, uninterrupted mirror.
The next phase involved extensive research and collaboration with our engineering manager, Dan Fandel, to explore suitable materials. They investigated oversized acrylic panels and films, only to find that the ideal materials did exist but posed challenges related to availability, budget, and shipping.
It was discovered that glass, contrary to our initial assumptions, was a more practical and cost-effective option than cast acrylic.
R&D (Research and Development) played a significant role in refining our approach. We tested various materials, including different mirrors and window tint films, to assess light transmission and clarity. We benchmarked inexpensive and high-end infinity mirrors to understand common issues and effective materials. Ultimately, we chose glass for its superior performance and affordability.
The engineering phase presented its own set of challenges. While initial designs in SolidWorks identified potential issues, real hurdles emerged during physical engineering. Ensuring the mirror’s weight—approximately 400 lbs.—was adequately supported, and handling fragile materials like glass required meticulous attention to detail. The installation process also involved addressing concerns related to transportation, mounting, and light diffusion.
Despite these challenges, the final product aligned with the original design intent. The custom-shaped mirror, featuring a back mirror, a front glass with a one-way film, and an integrated light source, was successfully installed. The frame and infrastructure were carefully engineered to support the mirror’s weight and ensure its secure placement on the wall.
The completed infinity mirror not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. It served as a striking centerpiece that reflected their brand identity and thematic focus on innovation. This project underscored our company’s commitment to delivering tailored, high-quality solutions despite complex challenges.
Reflecting on the project, we learned several key lessons. We realized the importance of balancing client desires with material limitations and practical considerations. Maintaining open communication with the client was crucial for exploring alternative solutions and adjusting to evolving requirements. Additionally, the project highlighted the critical role of detailed physical engineering and problem-solving in achieving the desired product.
In conclusion, this project exemplifies our ability to tackle ambitious design requests with creativity and precision. The successful completion of the custom infinity mirror not only satisfied the client’s needs but also demonstrated our capability to overcome significant challenges and deliver innovative solutions. We look forward to applying the insights gained from this project to future ventures, confident in our ability to meet even the most demanding design requests.
